Google Universal Cart: what it means for UK Sage sellers
Mentioned in this article
Google's Universal Cart lets shoppers fill one cart from many shops while they search. It's US only for now, but the groundwork for UK sellers starts in Sage: clean product data, live stock, and orders that flow back into your accounts.
At Google I/O on 19 May 2026, Google announced Universal Cart: one shopping cart that works across many shops, filled while people search and chat with Google's AI. It runs on a new open standard, the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which sets out how shops connect to it.
It's US first, and the UK has no date yet. But the things a shop needs to take part, such as accurate product data, live stock and orders that reach the accounts, are back-office jobs that UK sellers can get right now. Here's what Universal Cart is, what it asks of a shop, and how Sage 50 and Sage 200 sellers can prepare. Details were checked in October 2026, and Google is still changing them, so confirm before you plan around any date.
What is Google Universal Cart?
Universal Cart is a cart that belongs to the shopper rather than to any one shop. While they search on Google, including AI Mode, or ask the Gemini app for ideas, they can add products from different retailers to the same cart. Google has said YouTube and Gmail will follow.
The cart keeps working after something goes in. It watches for price drops, tells the shopper when an out-of-stock item comes back, and uses Google Wallet to apply card perks and loyalty offers. When they're ready to buy, there are two routes:
- Checkout on Google. The shopper pays with Google Pay in a few taps, without visiting your site.
- Hand-over to your site. The cart moves to your own checkout to finish the purchase.
Either way, you stay the merchant of record. The sale, the customer and the job of getting the parcel out are still yours.
What is the Universal Commerce Protocol?
UCP is an open standard, co-developed by Google with retailers and technology companies including Shopify, Stripe and Walmart. It describes how AI assistants, apps and shops talk to each other: finding products, building a cart, checking out and tracking the order afterwards.
The point of a shared standard is that a shop connects once rather than building a separate link for every AI assistant. Universal Cart is Google's first big use of it, but it's unlikely to be the last.
When is Universal Cart coming to the UK?
Not soon. Google said in May that Universal Cart would reach the US "this summer", and it began rolling out across Google Search and the Gemini app in October. Even in the US, shops join through an early-access programme, and Google chooses who to onboard.
Google's merchant documentation plans Canada and Australia for early 2027. For the UK, Google says only "later", with no date. Realistically, UK sellers should expect 2027 at the earliest.
That's no reason to ignore it. Most of the preparation also improves how you sell on Google today.
What does a shop need to take part?
Google's requirements come down to four things:
| What Google needs | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Product listings in Google Merchant Center | Accurate titles, prices and live stock in your product feed, with listings marked as eligible for checkout. |
| A UCP profile on your website | A small file at /.well-known/ucp that tells Google how to connect to your shop and what it supports. |
| A checkout route | Either Google Pay checkout on Google, which needs a payment provider that accepts Google Pay, or a hand-over to your own checkout. |
| Order updates back to Google | When customers check out on Google: order confirmed, shipped with tracking, then delivered, plus returns, refunds and cancellations. |
If you sell on Amazon, this will look familiar. A product feed goes out, orders come in, and despatch details go back to the channel. Universal Cart is another sales channel with the same shape.
Who does what?
Your ecommerce platform is likely to handle the checkout end. Shopify helped develop UCP, and Google itself tells shops on third-party platforms to ask their provider about its plans. If you run your own site, the profile file and checkout connection are a developer job against Google's published specifications.
The back office is a different matter, and no platform does it for you. The products, prices and stock that Google shows come from Sage. The orders customers place have to land in Sage. Despatch and tracking details have to come from your warehouse or shipping system. If any of those are done by hand today, a new channel that promises shoppers live stock and price-drop alerts will show it up quickly.
How Zynk helps Sage sellers get ready
Zynk connects Sage with ecommerce platforms, marketplaces and shipping systems. That's the half of Universal Cart that sits behind the checkout.
- Clean product data and live stock, now. Universal Cart starts from your Google Merchant Center listings. Zynk keeps products, prices and stock in your online store in step with Sage 50 or Sage 200, so a channel like Shopify's Google & YouTube app passes accurate data on to Merchant Center. Your Google Shopping listings benefit straight away, whatever happens with the cart.
- Orders into Sage, fulfilment back out. Zynk already does this for Amazon, bringing orders and refunds into Sage and sending stock and prices back. For Shopify, it also sends fulfilments and tracking back once an order is despatched. Universal Cart orders that come through your store follow the same path into Sage.
- Watching the UK launch. We're following Google's UCP specifications and UK timing, and will share what Zynk supports as the UK opening gets closer.

What UK sellers can do now
- Tidy up Google Merchant Center. Check titles, product identifiers, prices, shipping and returns policies. This helps your Google Shopping listings today.
- Make Sage the single source of stock and price. If your website and marketplaces are updated by hand, automate it before you add another channel.
- Capture despatch and tracking data. Universal Cart expects tracking to be sent back for orders taken on Google. Make sure your warehouse or shipping system records it in a form you can pass on.
- Ask your ecommerce platform about UCP. Find out whether it plans to support Universal Cart checkout in the UK, and when.
- Don't rush to buy anything. There's no UK date, and Google is still changing the details.

Frequently asked questions
What is Google Universal Cart?
A single shopping cart that works across many shops. Shoppers add products from different retailers while using Google Search or the Gemini app, then check out with Google Pay or move the cart to the retailer's own site. Google announced it at Google I/O on 19 May 2026, and it runs on the open Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).
Is Google Universal Cart available in the UK?
Not yet. As of October 2026 it is US only. Google's merchant documentation plans Canada and Australia for early 2027 and says only "later" for the UK, with no date.
Does Google become the seller if a customer checks out through Universal Cart?
No. You stay the merchant of record, so the sale, the customer relationship and fulfilment remain yours, just as they would on your own website.
What does my shop need to take part?
Product listings in Google Merchant Center with accurate prices and stock, a small UCP profile file on your website, a checkout route (Google Pay checkout on Google or a hand-over to your own checkout), and order updates sent back to Google if customers check out on Google. Ecommerce platforms can handle much of the checkout side; the product data and order handling come from your back office.
Does Zynk connect Sage to Google Universal Cart?
Not directly yet, because it isn't open to UK shops. Zynk already handles the back-office work Universal Cart depends on: products, prices and stock out of Sage, orders into Sage, and fulfilment and tracking back to your sales channels. We're following Google's specifications and UK timing.
