How to connect Sage to ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot or Gemini

How to connect Sage to ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot or Gemini

Mentioned in this article

ChatGPT and Claude can't read Sage on their own. Here is how to connect Sage 50 or Sage 200 to your AI assistant, which plans support it, and what to ask first.

ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini can't see your Sage data on their own. To ask them about your accounts, you connect them to an MCP server: a connector built on MCP (Model Context Protocol), the open standard AI assistants use to reach business systems. Insights AI, Zynk's Sage MCP server, connects Sage 50 and Sage 200 to all four, read-only and within your existing Sage permissions.

Once it's connected, you ask questions in plain English, such as "which customers are more than 60 days overdue?", and the assistant answers from your live Sage data. Here is how to set it up in each assistant. Menus and plan names change often; the steps below were checked in October 2026.

What you need before you start

  • Sage 50 or Sage 200, and a Sage login with the access you want the AI to have. Insights AI only sees what that login can see, so a login that can't view a ledger can't share it with the AI either.
  • An Insights AI account. We set this up with you and connect your Sage company, then give you the connector address to add to your assistant. See Insights pricing.
  • An AI assistant plan that supports custom connectors:
Assistant Plans that can add a custom connector Who adds it
Claude Free (one custom connector), Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise You, on Free, Pro or Max. An Owner, on Team or Enterprise
ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu. Pro, for read-only connectors An admin or owner, on Business or Enterprise. You, on Pro
Microsoft Copilot Copilot Studio agents, or Microsoft 365 Copilot through a declarative agent Your Microsoft 365 or Power Platform admin or developer
Gemini Gemini Enterprise Your Google Cloud or Gemini Enterprise admin

If you're choosing an assistant for company data, use a business plan. Business plans of ChatGPT and Claude don't use your conversations to train their models, and come with a data processing agreement. Is it safe to connect Sage to AI? explains the differences.

Step 1: connect Sage to Insights AI

Insights AI connects to Sage 50 or Sage 200 using your existing logins and permissions, so there is no data to export and no separate database to build. Our team does this with you during onboarding, and you finish with a connector address for your AI assistant.

Step 2: add Insights AI to your assistant

Connect Sage to Claude

On Free, Pro or Max, you add the connector yourself:

  1. In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors.
  2. Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
  3. Paste your Insights AI connector address and click Continue.
  4. Check the sign-in method Claude shows, click Continue, then Add.
  5. Sign in and approve access when prompted.

On Team or Enterprise, an Owner adds it once for the organisation in Organization settings > Connectors > Add > Custom > Web, pasting the same address. Each member then opens Customize > Connectors, finds Insights AI and clicks Connect.

Connect Sage to ChatGPT

OpenAI now calls custom connectors plugins, and you add them on the web version of ChatGPT rather than the mobile app.

On Business, Enterprise or Edu, an admin or owner sets it up for the workspace:

  1. Go to Plugins in ChatGPT and click +.
  2. Choose Add custom MCP server, give it a name such as "Insights AI (Sage)", and paste your connector address.
  3. Set up sign-in as prompted, confirm the warning, then click Create as a plugin.
  4. Publish it to your workspace so colleagues can use it.

On Pro, you follow the same steps for yourself. Pro supports read-only connectors, which suits Insights AI because it never writes to Sage.

OpenAI's help centre doesn't currently list custom connectors for Free, Go or Plus. If that's what you have, Claude or a ChatGPT business plan is the way in.

Connect Sage to Microsoft Copilot

Copilot connects to MCP servers through agents, so this is usually a job for whoever looks after Microsoft 365 or the Power Platform:

  • Copilot Studio: open your agent, go to Tools > Add a tool > New tool > Model Context Protocol, enter a name, a description and your connector address, and choose OAuth 2.0 sign-in. Your Power Platform data loss prevention policies apply to it like any other connector.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot: a developer adds Insights AI as an action on a declarative agent, using the Microsoft 365 Agents Toolkit. The agent then appears in Microsoft 365 Copilot chat for the people it's shared with.

Connect Sage to Gemini

For businesses, this goes through Gemini Enterprise. An admin adds Insights AI in the Google Cloud console as a custom MCP server data store with OAuth 2.0 sign-in, then enables its actions. Google blocks custom MCP servers by default with an organisation policy, so the admin has to allow it first.

The consumer Gemini app only supports custom apps on personal accounts in the US, so it isn't an option for UK work accounts.

Step 3: ask your first five questions

Start with questions you already know the answer to, so you can check the figures against Sage:

  1. "Which customers are more than 60 days overdue, and how much do they owe?"
  2. "How do sales this quarter compare with the same quarter last year?"
  3. "Who were our top 20 customers by revenue last year, and who has stopped ordering?"
  4. "Show supplier spend by month for the last 12 months."
  5. "What cash is due in and out over the next 30 days?"

A few habits get better answers: give exact dates or periods, ask the assistant to list the records behind a figure, and check anything important before you act on it. Questions you ask every month can become a report: see Sage reporting with Insights.

Which assistant should you use?

Use the one your team already has, as long as it's on a plan that supports custom connectors. If you're starting from scratch:

  • Claude is the quickest to try, because every plan can add a custom connector.
  • ChatGPT works well if you're on Business or Enterprise, or Pro for one person.
  • Copilot and Gemini suit organisations already standardised on Microsoft 365 or Google, with IT doing the set-up.

Whichever you choose, Insights AI works the same way: read-only, within your Sage permissions, with every answer traceable to the records it came from.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT read my Sage data?

Not on its own. ChatGPT needs an MCP server, such as Insights AI, to reach Sage 50 or Sage 200. Once connected, it reads your data live and read-only, within the permissions of the Sage login you connect with.

Can Claude access my Sage data?

Yes, once you add an MCP server for Sage as a custom connector. Claude allows custom connectors on every plan, including Free (limited to one). Insights AI gives Claude read-only access to Sage 50 or Sage 200.

Which ChatGPT plan do I need?

As of October 2026, OpenAI documents custom MCP connections (it calls them plugins) for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu, and read-only connections for Pro. Free, Go and Plus aren't listed, so check OpenAI's help centre before relying on them.

How long does it take to set up?

Adding the connector to your assistant takes a few minutes. Connecting Sage to Insights AI is done with your existing logins and permissions, and our team helps with it as part of onboarding.

Can the AI change anything in Sage?

No. Insights AI is read-only. It never posts, edits or deletes anything in Sage, whichever assistant you use it with.
